Google PageRank, also called Google PR, which is Google’s criteria for measuring the importance of web pages, is a hot debate among the online fraternity. Well, any online business owner may tend to get into every intricacy of his online campaign and dig out favorable and unfavorable sides to it. Now, the moment he notices Google PR toolbar and the page ranking, he is likely to get hold of his SEO marketer and asks questions concerning low rankings. We all know Google reigns supremely and so getting worried on what Google thinks about your page is ok, but then weighing your marketing status entirely on that basis is enough to mislead you.
First, it’s important that you understand what are Google’s parameters for marking importance of your page. It’s essentially a link analysis algorithm totaling how many times has a given page been backlinked and is updated more or less every three months considering only the incoming links for that much period. But, if that was all, anyone could have gone generating more and more backlinks and would have got the highest page rank…then where the trickiness is? Google has fixed the criterion of what it feels as important and unimportant incoming links to a page. Thus, if you think to enter the mess of buying links, not only that you are adopting unethical means but you may not get what you wanted from it as you essentially needed quality links related to specific keywords. PageRank is in no way a pointer of your content quality, site age, and overall backlinks, which are essentially an SEO campaign’s ingredients.
If you think your SEO is weak just because your PR is low and make up your mind to chase it around, your SEO campaign may get screwed up. Search engine optimization is all about search engine rankings and higher traffics. The process of course involves link building to serve the purpose, but don’t forget that the marketing objective of gaining traffic needs the focus on where your specific keywords put you up in the Google’s search results and how much visitors your site gets by it. How would you entirely link the flow of visitors to your page with just two or three months of backlink proportion, and that too of a qualitative nature, determining a rank? I mean incoming link magnitude as indicated by Google PR, is relatively very minimally proportioning with a visitor index. In simple words, a higher page rank does not directly mean high search engine rankings. It’s just a bit of it. It’s definitely not worth channelizing your SEO efforts into page ranking at the expense of majorly impacting search engine ranking building efforts such as those of joining directories, blog and article postings, forum participations, or joining online communities.
With this, we reach a bottom line that it’s better just to observe PageRank. If it’s higher, credit it to the vigorous SEO campaign as good SEO performance can definitely bring that about. But if not so, expedite the SEO process with its core components.

Sitemaps are one of the most important protocols for all websites as it is through sitemaps that search engines can crawl the website. It is sitemaps that inform the search engines about the URL of our sites and hence, the crawlers know about the existence of these pages and crawl them for ranking. A sitemap is an XML file that bears the list of all the URL’s on the website and a webmaster also includes additional information about each URL such as the date of last updating detail, the frequency of changes made and so on. All these details direct the crawlers and hence make the search engine work more intelligently.
The sitemaps are generally created by the webmaster on the website and the URL’s of these pages is submitted to several search engines like Google, Yahoo!, and MSN and so on. The benefits of sitemaps are as follows:
- If your website has dynamic content then it is very much beneficial to have a sitemap as the crawlers can easily know the details of the content updates and can accordingly crawl it on regular basis.
- Sitemaps are boon also when there are certain pages on your website that are not easy to discover for the Googlebot at the time of crawling. For e.g. pages such as AJAX.
- It is lot more advantageous for a newly made website
Nevertheless, it is not necessary to generate more than one sitemap.xml file up to 50,000 URL’s. However, it is recommended by Google that you should split your sitemap.html file into more than one if the number of outgoing links exceeds than 100. But sitemap.xml file can contain up to 50,000 URL or up to 10MB file size and the webmaster can split the sitemap.xml file as per your requirements. It is advisable to not to include those pages in sitemap which are not important for search engine (i.e.: admin pages, forms, login pages, etc) for better results.

The following lists of points are the pitfalls to avoid; however, the points are determined keeping international SEO in mind as much of the SEO work is outsourced. The points covered here are very small but require additional attention while promoting your website in international market.
- translation of words can be fatal in any language and so is the case in the SEO too. For example, if you are trying to do SEO work for car insurance in Spanish then ‘seguro de coche’ is the translated keyword but unfortunately, the Spanish speakers would prefer to use ‘seguro de auto’ which means auto insurance.
Therefore, translating keywords could lead to a lot of futile effort. So it is the biggest pitfall to avoid while going for international SEO work. The best way to overcome this is by using the target language words for best results.
- Another huge mistake one can make while doing international SEO is that of using the dot com domain. When targeting the local business with local language, it is always better to make use of local domains. This will help immensely in the SEO work and also will the search engines will locate your website quickly because of the geographical details mentioned in it. Not only is this beneficial with the search engine perspective but also with the user’s perspective too. Local domains build more trustworthiness among the visitor
- Falling into the trap of believing that just because someone in the office has a clue about the local language will help your work done properly. People might have studied foreign languages such as French or Spanish however, they do not come at par of the local speaker and local user of the language. The person might not be capable of understanding the intricacies and cultural aspects of the foreign language.
- Do not take any agency or company’s international claims at face value. This is again the most common mistake done by many several times. It is wise to check the company thoroughly out before starting the business with them.
Hope this list will help you in making the right decisions for your international SEO work.

The world of web is expanding by leaps and bounds everyday and so does the rise of the stiff battle to make your website stand higher on the search engines. However, in this run the local businesses get lost and also struggle to be there on the list for the relevant keywords or phrases. Google has well understood this need of the local businessmen and hence it has recently changed its algorithms. This change has enabled the local items to be displayed in the search results for relevant keywords.
The users definitely look for the local results in many cases while searching something on the web. For example, the user might need some locksmith services and therefore searches for the keyword locksmith along with the name of the resident city. This makes the search engine provide the user with relevant results for the specific entry searched by the user. According to a research, nearly 70 % of users perform local search for some or the other household products or services.
Make sure that you check that your website is displayed on the search engine list when the keyword of your business is searched. You can simply perform a search on Google by using your business keyword. In the search results you will be able to see your website being displayed besides the map and location. You can also check the same for Yahoo search engine as well.
How to Make Your Website listed on the Google Local Listings or Yahoo! local?
For getting your website displayed for local search you need to first register with Google. You need to create an account with Google Local Business Center wherein you will be able to create a unique username and password. Once you are logged in to the account you have got to enter all your business information including the name of your company, address, contact number/s, website URL, office timings, and options for payment and so on. These are all the basic details along with this you also need to provide a short description of your business and category under which you wish to display your business. After this is done you will be provided with a PIN number through SMS or phone you need to enter this pin number and verify the details provided by you. Once all the details are verified your website will start displaying on the Google when your business related keyword is searched.
The process is similar for Yahoo! local as well but the only difference is that you will have to pay a charge for it. The charges vary according to the location of your business.
